Writhes In The Murk signifies the next phase in the existence of Ævngelist’s approach to experimental and extreme dark music. Falling somewhere within, but never fully defined by, the current boundaries of death metal, black metal, dark ambient, industrial, power violence, and black noise with a heavy influence from choral music, jazz textures, and new age sensibilities. And if that description isn’t enough for you, the band’s label, Debemur Morti states that: “Writhes In The Murk is a musically diverse downward spiral of nightmare and horrifying bliss.” Believe us, we’re happy to vouch for this description.
The band formed in Oregon in 2010 releasing a couple of full-lengths, De Masticatione Mortuorum in Tumulis in 2012 and Omen Ex Simulacra in 2013, and we’ve just interviewed them about this, their third album, for our 10th anniversary edition which hits the streets on 30 September. We think they’re worth paying some serious attention to. So, with our compliments, enjoy your journey down into Ævngelist’s murky musical depths, and try not to writhe around too much as the album unfolds.
