-the original album Quad SQ stereo, remastered in 2012

-a live disc, recorded at the Paris Theatre in London on March 9, 1972

Originally recorded in December 1971 in Montreux, Switzerland “Machine Head” was Deep Purple’s most successful album, reaching number 1 on the UK charts, and number 7 on the US charts.  The album contains Purple’s most well known song, “Smoke on the Water,” which details the actual events of a fire that destroyed a casino that the band was initially set to record the album in.  Other fan favorites that appear on the album are “Highway Star” and “Space Truckin” which still appear in the band’s live set to this day.

Recently, original Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord lost his battle with pancreatic cancer on 16 July 2012.  Lord was a founding member of the band, performing with them until his retirement in 2002 due to a knee injury and the need to pursue solo work.  The thunderous roar coming from Lord’s Hammond organ was a key component to the Deep Purple sound and a perfect compliment to the guitar playing of Ritchie Blackmore.  Lord is survived by two daughters and his wife Vickie.
