Sure, we could have called it the ZT Christmas Party but we decided Winterfest sounded less like we’re inviting you to join us in photocopying our arses. Winterfest also fits very neatly around the bands we’ve invited to play, and we couldn’t resist pulling together a lineup which includes some of the UK’s best from the undeground.

Headliners Winterfylleth joined us for our Xmas shindig back in 2009, followed that up by sealing a deal with Candlelight Records, and took over the cover of issue 036 back in 2010. 2011 sees them return to the stage as Winterfest headliners. Manchester’s Winterfylleth have earned every bit of coverage they’ve had in ZT and we’re looking forward to seeing them play out a full set.

As main support, we’re pleased to welcome London’s blackened death/thrash squad Scythian, who have fast-earned their reputation as one of the capital’s best. Joining London’s hardened drinking set are Basement Torture Killings, whose serial killer deathgrind has succeeded in sending ripples of entertainment across what’s otherwise a suitably dour scene. Faced with, but not daunted by, the task of kicking off the night are Birmingham’s death metal guitar virtuosos, Sarpanitum, whose recent reformation has set our ears alight with their killer Fidelium EP.

That’s the bands sorted. But the Winterfest doesn’t stop there, oh no, this is afterall, a chance for us to give something back to everyone who makes it along for the night – ’tis the season to be jolly and all that. We’re delighted to announce that our somewhat infamous ZT Father Christmas will be lurking in his Grotto throughout the night with sacks full of giveaways – all you have to do is hop up on his knee and he’ll do the rest…

So not only are the tickets priced at the very reasonable £7.50 each, you’ll also go home merrily with a CD or two. Winterfylleth will come off stage at 11pm and the Purple Turtle is licensed till 1am, so you’re free to take advantage of the warm surroundings at the bar for another couple of hours – and if you’re lucky, we might well bend a few arms and get some guest DJs on the decks.
