As a tribute to the recently departed Relapse Records director of sales, Pat Egan, grind enthusiasts Pig Destroyer have issued a never before released EP, titled “Mass and Volume,” which is only available via the band’s BandCamp page. All proceeds from the sale of this EP will go towards a college fund set up for Egan’s daughter Katie.
Regarding the move to donate the proceeds of this EP, the band commented “Pat Egan was a friend and a keystone member of the Relapse family for many of the years we have been involved with it. He devoted his life to supporting underground music and he immeasurably helped develop the bands he worked with. His untimely passing on February 18 2013 shocked the many people that his life and work had touched.”
In a departure from their usual sound, this EP is classified as a doom metal release, and comes with cover art by well-known stoner rock/doom artist Arik Roper. “Mass and Volume” was recorded towards the end of the sessions for Pig Destroyer’s “Phantom Limb” album as a result of unused studio time. Due to line-up shifts within the band, the EP was shelved and all interest was lost. In addition to adding to the lasting legacy of Pat Egan, Pig Destroyer commented that “‘Mass & Volume’ serves as a great epilogue to that particular era of the band.”
