Chicago based Pelican, who’s instrumental soundscapes have been flowing for the last 13 years, have released three tracks on their Soundcloud page, as a preview to their forthcoming album “Forever Becoming.” The tracks, “The Cliff,” “Deny the Absolute,” and “Immutable Dusk,” can all be sampled here.
“Forever Becoming” is the band’s fifth full-length album, and is slated to be released via Southern Lord on 15 October 2013. Recorded with the help of Chris Common (Chelsea Wolfe, These Arms Are Snakes), this album consists of 8 tracks that run the gammut from pure pummeling metal to atmospheric soundscapes, with healthy doses of melody sprinkled about; all performed seamlessly. Pelican themselves have described it as “a lot darker, depressive, and angry.”
Additionally, this is the first album from the quartet that does not feature original/founding guitarist Laurent Schroeder-Lebec, who left the group in June of last year, citing the need to spend more time with his family. The vacant spot was initially filled in by Dallas Thomas as a touring only guitarist with Pelican intending to carry on as a three-piece. As fate would have it, Thomas would join as a full-time member contributing to the writing process for “Forever Becoming,” leading Southern Lord to describe the new incarnation as “purer, more focused, and far more assured.”
