IRELAND’S VENUSIAN DEATH CELL DISCUSS ‘ATHAIR SPAWN’

Ireland’s Venusian Death Cell have been known to ZT for years now, not least because every so often the band’s inventor, David Vora, sends us some new music. His output has also featured on the covermount CD a few times, most recently on the disc with issue 079, which is in fact still streaming even though the issue is offsale (though it is available to buy as a back issue via ztmag.com.store.com). We stole a moment to speak to the truly prolific DIY’ster.

“I am from Dublin, Ireland. Venusian Death Cell is the name of a monster, drawn on a card from a set of Top Trump Cards. The designer of the cards got the character from the Dr. Who TV programme. There is only one band member: David Vora,” says – funnily enough – David Vora when he’s quizzed about the band’s origins and their unusual name. And he continues: “Musically I express myself through very heavy music. I have put out about 26 releases/hellstrikes. Lyrically my music is often very personal; animal rights, anti -Christian-related and also eclectic in topic. Aesthetically I try to create good songs even if I’m not technically proficient. My contemporaries are other metal musicians and I focus on good songwriting. My music is influenced by what I can play, my own and others’ music and my personality.”

As mentioned, David chose to represent his band with a track called ‘Athair Spawn’ – now, you lot don’t always get to see artwork, and one thing that is worth mentioning here is that David hand draws all the covers that accompany his releases – and it’s fair to say that they always stand out from the crowd, with his latest no exception. Why did he choose to include this particular example on the ZT compilation? “The track has typical characteristics of a good Venusian Death Cell song. ‘Athair Spawn’ is about an evil creature called Athair Spawn whom I praise. I am trying to survive in the world, my enemies are defeated and the truth wins in the end. The lyrics are in the Irish language – it is one of eight songs on my CD.” Alongside taking care of the artwork, David reveals that “Venusian Death Cell is very DIY. I record in ‘The Temple’ – which is my bedroom – although I once recorded at Track Mix 24 Track Studio with an engineer.”

Will we get the chance to witness Venusian Death Cell play live? “I played three live gigs and busked,” he shares. “Live dates are not on the cards at the moment; the goal for the band is to keep writing music and hopefully get some success. I regularly write and release new music. I don’t have distribution for my music….” which is why it’s great to be able to share David’s music via Zero Tolerance Magazine.
