EDITORIAL STATEMENT
“It’s that time again, and doesn’t it fly when you’re having fun? Or does it fly by when you haven’t had time to catch your breath from whatever you were previously consumed by... Yeah, there’s definitely something in that!
And a busy year it has been so far. After it seemed like the Christmas sluggishness would go on until it was time for the supermarkets to get busy racking those puds in time for the, er, August rush... (sorry to go on, but why oh why do they do that?!), all the things labels, promoters and bands themselves were so keen to tell us we’d be fools to miss in 2006 are drawing closer - and in some cases, have or are just about to arrive.
As predictions indicated, one thing that isn’t failing to grab people’s attention is the near cataclysmic clash of releases from extreme music’s ‘big-wigs’. The next couple of months are plentiful for come-backs, new projects, exclusive live events - you name it - it’s more than likely scheduled in some busy label exec’s diary... In all the excitement it would be easy to neglect some of the less fought-over artists, who, in the true spirit of keeping music alive, march on regardless of what’s unfolding around them, putting as much hard graft into their contributions but resigned in the knowledge that there’s much less chance of them being noticed, praised, criticised or even, heaven forbid, recognised for it.
Bal-Sagoth are one such band. Balanced precariously - for some: almost teetering on the edge of the abyss of obscurity, but just as easily for others: possessing all the attributes of a band whose recorded work could be regarded as the stuff of legends. After a five year wait for their new album, expectations are running high on the underground as to whether The Chthonic Chronicles, the finale in their six-part opus, will see the band close this chapter in their career victoriously. That is for you to make your own mind up about when the album reaches the shops in the next few days, but this edition’s Release Of The Issue might drop a none-too-subtle hint as to our thoughts on the matter. But opinions on ...Chronicles aside, we didn’t want to pass on the opportunity to delve deep into the thoughts of the band’s reclusive mastermind, Byron Roberts, to give you a cover story that truly journeys far beyond the limits often set by the clever marketing spiel of the artists you might ‘expect’ to find on the cover of an internationally distributed magazine. Oh, and then there’s the rest of the issue... Enjoy!
