ZT Interview: Dornenreich prepare to bring their sublime Mystic Places concert to London

Dornenreich are a band with a rich 22 year history. A unique band. A band that can take the listener to wonderful places. And in association with ZT, Dornenreich are bringing their Mystic Places live experience to London. The location is the St. Pancras Old Church in London, a place that can trace its history as far back as the Norman Conquest. ZT caught up with guitarist/vocalist Eviga for a few words on their upcoming date…

ZT: Can you tell us when and why the concept of the Mystic Places concerts was born?

Eviga: Since  our acoustic tour with Tenhi and Of The Wand And The Moon back in 2001 we have played purely acoustic concerts in quite usual clubs now and again. But then in 2007 we were given the chance to perform our music in the crypt of the Völkerschachtdenkmal in Leipzig and all the people involved felt that such a special and by itself uplifting location merges with our highly dynamic, vital and soulfully atmospheric expression incredibly well – one can see that on our Live-DVD Nachtreisen (Nocturnal Journeys) we recorded there. Since then we tried to get in touch with open minded promoters and over the years we have built strong bonds with selected churches and further special locations.

ZT: What do these concerts offer that regular gigs don’t?

Eviga: The intensity and intimacy an acoustic concert is able to conjure results in its very own magic and strength especially with a poetic and pictorial expression such us ours being feverishly passionate and dynamic.

ZT: Are you looking forward to visiting London? It’s been a long time since you were last here…

Eviga: Absolutely. It will be a tremendous joy to play in St. Pancras Old Church. Our last show in London took place in 2011 (!) co-headlining with our friends of Alcest. So, it’s been a far too long time and I really hope that numerous people will experience this unique atmosphere with us. Playing such intense music in such an exquisite location will make for precious memories for the audience and us without any doubt.

ZT: What are you planning for your London set?

Eviga: We intend to play a very long set with a special dramaturgy. It will include many classics out of 22 years of Dornerneich and we will also play some brand new songs for the very first time and more than one year in advance of their actual release.

ZT: Are you looking forward to playing with Duncan Evans?

Eviga: Indeed! Duncan is not only a warm-hearted person but also a fantastic musician. I saw him perform in a church in Berlin some years ago when he was opening for Empyrium (a band I  play live-guitar in) and since then I really wanted to play with him, too, for I was so delighted by his stirring performance.

ZT: Any final words?

Eviga: It took us seven years to get the chance to return to London the way we wanted to return and we truly hope that London’s audience won’t miss out on this special opportunity to experience and live through heart – and handmade expression within the acoustic sphere of spirituality.

Duncan Evans also shared a few words on the events:
I am honoured to have been invited to perform supporting Dornenreich at this intimate acoustic show at the iconic St Pancras Old Church. We talked a long time ago about performing on the same stage, and this has finally become possible. I will be playing a set featuring some older material along with some specially tailored arrangements of songs from my forthcoming new album which is currently being recorded. I hope to see you there for what will undoubtedly be an exceptional evening.
