Godflesh have always been there. Monolithic, dead-cold, immobile, a cry out from the abyss that no one hears. Godflesh's music evokes many things, if you let it, but they always provoke. You don't have a choice when faced with their shuddering, juddering sound: you have to pick a side, or to paraphrase the title of one of their (sorely overlooked) albums, us and them. Since the release of Streetcleaner, arriving at an especially impressionable time in my youth, Godflesh have BEEN THERE. Their music moves despite its (monolithic, dead-cold, immobile) nature; we moved with it. It also evolved, just as we also (hopefully) evolved. People the world over have developed strong emotional ties to Godflesh, communing in way not dissimilar to their namesake, and the same holds true for this writer.
Then, they were gone. No ceremony, no fanfare, no last hurrah - just gone, back to that abyss. Their loss was mourned, of course, but another phoenix arose from Godflesh music: the glorious, gorgeous crush of Jesu. For many, this was no substitute; there was only one Godflesh. But, only a few years ago, that "was" became an is again, and Godflesh returned to the stage, if not the studio. It was only a matter of time before the latter would inevitably happen, though, and indeed it has: first with a newly released EP, the tellingly titled Decline & Fall, and not long after you read this, an even-more-tellingly-titled album, A World Lit Only By Fire. You will soon hear that all is well, even if the world Godflesh's music occupies again is darker than ever. They've lit a fire once more, and we must needs follow it. Illumination: their first cover story for us is entirely deserved. We also present more illumination across the rest of this issue. There's the table of contents just to the right of this - hark and engage! A pretty nifty bunch of bands, and some suitably nifty writing to accompany it. But enough of my prattle; I'll let you good readers drown in the darkness. Or is that return to the light? We offer both here at ZT, because we're cool like that.
